June 22, 2010. Village elders and leaders in Shuhada, a district in Badakhshan, invite us to lunch--with fresh mulberries, cherries, chicken, and yogurt, and asked Karin Ronnow and I to sit at the head of the "table." We just visited Mahmudan High School, built by the Central Asia Institute, where girls attend school in two shifts, because it's so crowded. CAI program director Sarfraz Khan, far right, Commandhan Wohid Khan, and village elders sign paperwork for the school. Photo by Ellen Jaskol.
